Frequently Asked Questions for Schools

Frequently Asked Questions for Schools

How much do assessments cost?

My current cost of a full assessment and a comprehensive written report that lasts a lifetime is £375 plus travel. An invoice will be sent to your school when the diagnostic report is complete. I am not VAT registered, so there is no charge for VAT.

Why would a child benefit from a dyslexia assessment?

A dyslexia assessment will give a clear and detailed understanding of the child's learning strengths and weaknesses. Whether or not dyslexia is diagnosed, it will help your school give them effective, tailored support.

SENCOs and class teachers have appreciated that my approach values all the school is already doing to support the child. The recommendations are not onerous and can help ensure the child reaches their potential.

What age do you assess?

The assessment materials I use are designed for children over 8 years old.

What happens before an assessment?

It is essential that the child has had an eye test in the last two years.

I send some questionnaires to collect background information on the child from their parents and school and I welcome further discussion.

What happens during an assessment?

The assessment process usually lasts between 2-3 hours. I usually carry out assessments during the morning and ensure the child can join their class for breaktime. Sometimes it is more appropriate for the assessment to be carried out in two separate sessions.

I can travel to your school, all we need is a quiet room with a table.

The assessment looks specifically at underlying ability, working memory, phonological awareness, processing speed, reading, spelling and writing.

What happens after an assessment?

You will receive a full report usually within four weeks of completing the assessment. The assessment process will reveal a detailed learning profile of strengths and weaknesses that will be clearly explained. It will also include individualised recommendations for support at home and in school.

I can talk through the report with the SENCO, class teacher or parents and provide further information or support as needed.

Do you offer training for staff and/or parents?

Yes, I enjoy delivering training, and I received some lovely feedback from training I have done for the Northamptonshire SEND Partnership and clusters of schools. As a member of the Delphi panel that developed the new definition of dyslexia in May 2024, I am pleased to share the updated definition and implications for identifying and supporting students with dyslexia in your school.
